This is one of the most common questions we are asked at Ibbott & Co. Dental Clinic.
The truth is, that both Invisalign® clear aligners and fixed braces are excellent orthodontic treatments. Each has its own advantages, and the best option depends on your teeth, your lifestyle and your commitment to treatment.
Many people assume that fixed braces are more effective because they have been around for decades. In reality, modern Invisalign treatment is capable of correcting many complex orthodontic problems when it is carefully planned and carried out by an experienced clinician.
In our practice, the majority of patients are treated successfully with Invisalign, but we still offer fixed braces for selected cases where they may provide the best solution.
The biggest difference is that Invisalign uses a series of removable, custom-made clear aligners to gently move your teeth.
Traditional braces use brackets bonded to the teeth, connected by wires that are adjusted throughout treatment.
Both systems are designed to achieve the same goal: healthy, well-aligned teeth and a functional bite.
For many patients, Invisalign offers several significant benefits.
More discreet
One of Invisalign’s biggest attractions is its appearance.
The clear aligners are much less noticeable than traditional braces, making them an excellent option for adults and teenagers who would prefer their orthodontic treatment to be as discreet as possible.
Although small tooth-coloured attachments are often placed on certain teeth to help the aligners move them efficiently, these are generally far less visible than metal brackets and wires.
Easier to keep your teeth clean
Because Invisalign aligners are removable, you simply take them out to brush and floss your teeth.
This allows you to maintain your normal oral hygiene routine without having to clean around brackets and wires.
This is particularly important because excellent oral hygiene helps reduce the risk of gum inflammation, staining and decay during orthodontic treatment.
No food restrictions
With fixed braces, certain foods can damage brackets or wires.
With Invisalign, you remove the aligners before eating, so you can continue to enjoy your normal diet throughout treatment.
The biggest challenge is that Invisalign only works if it is worn.
For treatment to progress as planned, aligners should be worn for around 22 hours every day.
They should only be removed for eating, drinking anything other than water, and cleaning your teeth.
If aligners are not worn consistently, teeth will not move according to plan, treatment may take longer, and additional aligners may be required.
For patients who feel they may struggle to remember to replace their aligners after meals, fixed braces can sometimes be the more reliable option because they remain attached to the teeth throughout treatment.
Although Invisalign is suitable for many patients, fixed braces still have an important role.
Because they cannot be removed, they don’t rely on the same level of patient compliance.
For some particularly complex tooth movements, or for patients who know they would struggle to wear aligners consistently, fixed braces may provide the best solution.
This is why we continue to offer them for selected cases when we believe they are the right treatment.
What about lingual braces?
Lingual braces are attached to the inside surfaces of the teeth, making them virtually invisible from the front.
While they can be an excellent aesthetic option, they often cause more irritation to the tongue and can affect speech more than Invisalign.
For many patients looking for a discreet orthodontic solution, Invisalign offers a more comfortable alternative.
Many people spend a lot of time deciding between Invisalign and braces.
In reality, the appliance itself is only one part of successful orthodontic treatment.
The most important factor is careful diagnosis, detailed treatment planning and meticulous finishing.
Neither Invisalign nor fixed braces are “off-the-shelf” treatments.
Every patient has different teeth, a different bite and different treatment goals.
The quality of the final result depends on how carefully the treatment is planned, monitored and refined throughout the process, together with the patient’s commitment to wearing aligners or maintaining excellent oral hygiene.
For many patients, Invisalign provides an excellent combination of aesthetics, comfort and convenience.
Its removable nature makes eating easier and helps patients maintain much better oral hygiene throughout treatment.
However, it is not automatically the best choice for everyone.
Some patients are better suited to fixed braces, particularly if consistent aligner wear is likely to be a challenge or if a particular tooth movement would be better achieved using fixed appliances.
The best orthodontic treatment is the one that is chosen for the right reasons—not simply because it is the newest or the least visible.
Every smile is different.
At Ibbott & Co. Dental Clinic, we carry out a comprehensive assessment using digital scanning and detailed treatment planning to determine which option is most appropriate for you.
Whether that is Invisalign or fixed braces, our goal is always the same: to create a healthy, attractive smile that functions well and remains stable for years to come.
